I am always on the lookout for an affordable diver that offers a lot for the money. Van Speyk, a brand that I first learn about from Watchuseek in 2012 has a new diver being released to the market.

Before we get started with the new diver watch, let look at a little history of the brand. Van Speyk watches is named after Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk, a Dutch national hero.

In the Golden Age the current Kingdom of the Netherlands occupied a global perch in terms of Trade, Science, Art and Military Power (especially at sea). This period of time formed an important part of the foundation of the wealth, both economically and culturally, that we in present time Netherlands find ourselves in.

Economic decline and turbulent years is what The Netherlands in the 18th century had to endure. Amidst this social rumble Jan Carel Josephus van Speyk was born in Amsterdam on the 31st of January, 1802. Although educated as a tailor, Van Speyk was fascinated by the adventures that go with the life of a sailor. He followed his heart and in the years that followed, he became a marine lieutenant and conducted many naval trading- and combat missions across the globe and even acquired the “ridderkruis der vierde klasse van de Militaire Willems-Orde”; the Dutch equivalent of the Medal of Honor.

On the 5th of February 1831, Van Speyk (29) became a Dutch national hero when he headed for the Antwerp harbor in Belgium to examine shiploads. A year prior, the Belgium Revolution led to the dissolution of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and the proclamation of an independent Belgium. Upon arrival in Antwerp, a furious party of Antwerp workmen boarded Van Speyk’s gunboat “No.2”. Van Speyk then spoke the legendary phrase: “…and going down in history as an infamous Dutchman? I rather blow this ship and myself to smithereens, than surrender”. By throwing a lit cigar into a barrel of gunpowder in the ships armory, the ship exploded. Van Speyk did not survive his act. Because of his reluctance to comply and as a result of his display of devotion to his flag, he is considered an important hero in the history of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. He inspirited the Dutch civilians.

Today, more than two centuries hereafter, we follow our hearts in the spirit of Jan Carel van Speyk by manufacturing these splendid Van Speyk watches. Van Speyk precisely unifies the feeling of a majestic Dutch history and our national pride. A watch brand with an international allure, as well as an undeniable Dutch identity.

Now that we learned a little history of the brand, let look at the specs of the new Van Speyk Dutch Diver. The Dutch Diver features a reliable Miyota 8215 automatic movement along with a 42mm Sandwich dial case made of stainless steel. The dive watch also features a sapphire crystal, unidirectional bezel, 200M water resistance and a screw down crown. The watch features SuperLuminova on the hands and hour markers. The bracelet is stainless steel with brushed and polished links to offer a sophisticated classic look.

Last year I followed several new watch startups launch their first watch to the market on Kickstarter. I am finally able to review several of the watches that ended up getting funded. The Erroyl Heritage watched ending up with $40,972AUD of its initial goal of $15,000AUD. The E30 is a nice blend of elegance and style with an automatic movement. Australia has been a hotbed of great new watch companies and Erroyl plans to be at the top of the heap with long-term future in mind.

ERROYL is an Australian watch company that launched in 2014 with the focus on designing refined, elegant and enduring mechanical watches. ERROYL is a touch of Earl and a dash of Royal. Inspired by the Anglo-Saxon title of Earl – meaning a member of the nobility – ERROYL produce refined timepieces that imbue elegance, respect and longevity.

40mm diameter, 316L marine grade stainless steel case
10mm case height and 20mm lug width
Exhibition case back
Japanese Miyota Cal. 9015 movement (automatic and hand winding), 24 jewels and 28,800 vibrations per hour
Approximately 42 hour power reserve
Flat scratch resistant sapphire crystal (front and back)
Anti-reflective coating (underside)
20mm black genuine leather alligator grain strap (tang buckle)
50m / 5ATM water resistance
Luxury leather display box

Erroyl is the brainchild of Wes Knight who enlisted a couple of friends to start a new line of watches under the Erroyl brand name. While the first watch was launched on Kickstarter, I’m told future watches will be sold directly to the consumer through their website. This will allow Erroyl to offer the best prices and maintain the highest quality.

The watches come in black, white, and rose gold with brown and black straps. The Erroyl watch uses the Japanese movement Miyota 9015 that has been proven to be reliable and a favorite amongst Micro brand companies. The watch also features Flat scratch resistant sapphire crystal, 10mm case height and 20mm lug width, exhibition case back, and 50m water resistance. The company did not skimp when it came to the Flat scratch resistant sapphire crystal that is on both the front and back of the watch. Many brands tend to use cheaper mineral glass for the caseback. The Erroyl watch comes in a nice leather display box perfect for gift giving.

The 40mm case is a great modern size for a dress watch. The watch is superbly made and comparable to watches such as entry-level Swiss Tissot Le Locle or a Hamilton Visodate. The deployment clasp strap which was a stretch goal for Kickstarter backers adds another layer of sophistication. The watch is versatile in that it can be worn with a polo, blazer or suit and not look out of place. For a first time model, the Erroyl E30 is refined and well polished compared to other watches that I have reviewed. The black dial is simply stunning with its textured concentric circle pattern and when the watch face hits light the sunburst effect is in full force. The watch has applied hour markers with Roman numerals markers at three, six, nine and twelve.

The Erroyl watches is available for an amazing $300.79USD making it one of the best bang for your buck automatic watches available. I cannot think of another watch at this price point with the features and design that Erroyl watch offers. Erroyl E30 Heritage watch hits all the check marks I’m looking for in a timepiece to wear at the office or going out with friends. If you’re looking for a luxury watch without the huge price tag then the Erroyl E30 would be fine choice to add to your collection.
