I was looking for a leather strap for a change pace when I get sick of wearing a bracelet for my Omega Seamaster Pro. I have never owned a Shell Cordovan strap although I did own a pair of Allen Edmonds Fifth Street boots in Shell Cordovan. I found that Shell Cordovan is best leather you can own. Unlike cow leather, Shell Cordovan doesn’t crease and last a lifetime while still looking new. The Da Luca Mayhem 20mm Shell Cordovan strap gives my Omega watch a luxury feel that can be worn casual or dressy.

Da Luca is one of my favorite leather strap brands as I have always been impressed with the quality even if you are paying a bit of premium for it, it is well worth it in my opinion. The Mayhem Shell Cordovan strap is surprisingly soft and comfortable to wear. It is not too thick on the wrist and pairs perfectly with the SMP watch. This strap is color 8 which is a dark maroon color that has a dark reddish brown color to it.

Shell Cordovan made from horsehide is the best quality of leather and Da Luca has created a watch strap that will last a lifetime with little maintenance. This is the kind of strap that will only get better with age and form to your wrist. If you are looking for a watch strap that will last and look amazing paired with your high end watch then give the Da Luca Mayhem 20mm Shell Cordovan strap a try.

Airspeed offers cutting edge new design in the world of watches. The company CJR watches has previously launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in the past and is promoting it’s latest new watch, the CJR Airspeed. The CJR Airspeed offers up curved glass that goes all the way to the edge. The curved casing is made from Hesalite crystal, a robust, and shatterproof material. The great thing about Hesalite is that it reduces smudging and the dial has a warmer look.

The Airspeed is powered by an Automatic 21 jewel 21,600 BPH Miyota 8219. The Miyota 8200 series is considered a workhorse movement and should be reliable for years to come. The watch comes in black which is considered the Pilot watch and the beige dial Vintage style timepiece. The markings on the dial and the hands are coated in in Super-LumiNova. This should make for easy readability at night.

Case Diameter: 43.0 mm
Case Thickness: 10.0 mm
Lug Width: 20.0 mm
Case Material: Hesalite Crystal
Movement: Miyota Caliber 8219
Dial: PVD Coating with Super-LumiNova (Pilot Ver. Only)
Water Resistance: 3 ATM (30 m)

The CJR Airspeed features a first curved regulator watch. The regulator complication first appeared in the late 17th century and was used by watchmakers for verifying the rates of their creations. The basis of a regulator dial is the second, minute and hour hands are separated into sub-dials. The black dial Airspeed includes a black genuine leather strap and the beige dial watch includes a light brown genuine leather strap.

CJR Airspeed watch is truly innovative and futuristic watch with a little vintage thrown in as well. The curved glass dome shape draws in light and reflects the internal fluorescent blue(black dial model)/fluorescent red(beige dial model) ring. Pricing starts at an incredible $329 and can be preorderd on Kickstarter now HERE

Dutch Brand Benson Watch winders released a new high end watch winder line by the name of the Black Series Collection. The models come in black, white and carbon. The watch winder is 24cmx24cmx26cm in size perfect to put on a desk or shelf. The attractive glossy paint finish will fit into any home decor. I was fortunate to review the Benson Black Series 2.16.W in white and here are my thoughts.

Benson black series high gloss white finish.
Wood constructions.
Wind and maintain all brands of automatic watches.
Automatic timed winding cycle prevents over winding.
Quiet winding operation.
Independent individually programmable winding heads.
Winding heads rotate clockwise only, counterclockwise only or bi-directionally.
Adjustable turns per day. 600, 900, 1200, 1500, 1800 and 2100.
Hinged door with push button latch and glass viewing window.
Easy to use touch screen control panel.
White LED interior lighting with on / off function.
Programmed winding cycle repeats automatically.
Speed winding feature.
USB port to charge and device.
Operates on the included AC wall adapter.
Self-adjusting watch holders are suitable for both mens and ladies watches.
Winder dimensions: 10.25″ wide, 9.5″ deep and stands 9.5″ tall. Weight: 12 pounds.
2 year parts and labor warranty through Ohio based H&H Enterprises – WatchWinderPlace.

The Benson Black Series Watch winder that I received can wind up to two automatic watches at one time. Also there is three watch holders on top to put three automatic watches. So you can rotate the automatic watches. The watch winder is made with 12 layers of white paint over wood that creates a glossy finish. The white paint is perfectly coated and gives the watch winder a luxurious feel.

The motors used in this watch winder are reliable Japanese motors compared to cheaper Chinese motors found in other watch winders. Each rotor is individually adjustable in terms of direction of rotation and TPD (turns per day: number of rotations per day). The winder has adjustable turns in six different settings from 600, 900, 1200, 1500, 1800 and 2100. You can choose to set one watch at 600 turns per day and the other watch 2100 turns per day. Winding heads rotate clockwise only, counterclockwise only or bi-directionally. The winder has a nice glass window to view your watches as they turn. The watch winder also has a USB port to charge your electronic devices into such as Smartphone, tablet, camera and more. The watch winder is almost silent and you can barely here the watch winder in a silent room. The company will include an AC Adapter based on your country of location.

Benson Black Series watch winder is the new standard in high quality watch winder for your luxury watches. If spend thousands of dollars on your automatic watches then you would want a high end watch winder to pair with it. Benson Black Series Watch Winders are well made, feature Japanese motors Mabuchi Motors that are silent, perfect glossy paint finish, three watch holders on top and two separate winders on the bottom. I have such a large collection of automatic watches that it is difficult to wear each one so a winder is a must to keep my watches wound and ready to go.

In three months Benson Watch winders plans to release a new single watch winder in black, white and carbon.

Helm Watches appeared to come out of nowhere and release it’s first watch to the market. The company is based out of Hong Kong and released the Vanuatu fairly quickly for a new startup. Although it may seem to be rushed to the market this watch was years in the making. And the company worked hard to create a watch that would be well received by the watch community. Helm Watches skipped Kickstarter and other crowdfunding routes to sell directly to the consumer through preorder. When I first heard about the watch, there was already a buzz on internet watch forums like WatchUSeek about the Vanuatu. I had a chance to go hands on with this new budget diver watch and here are my thoughts.

Helm Watches is considered a budget diver as it’s price is under $500 and this is where good value comes in Microbrands as they sell direct to the consumer and cut the middle man out of the equation. The first thought I had when opening the box was the quality of the timepiece as it had a nice heft and solid build quality. I believe at the price that this is selling at it can’t be beat. The Helm Watch comes with both a bracelet and Nato strap with options for a leather strap options sold separately HERE. I had no problems swapping out the Nato strap and attaching the bracelet onto the watch. You can purchase a spring bar tool from the company for $10 with the watch or $18 by itself HERE.

Named for the South Pacific island nation famous for its coral reefs and a WWII shipwreck, the HELM Vanuatu epitomizes rugged functionality. The Vanuatu features 43mm case, 300M Water Resistance, Sapphire Crystal, Seiko NH35 movement, and each was is tested according with ISO 6425:1996. The 43mm case is a good size for a watch without being too over-sized. The Seiko NH35 is a workhorse movement that keeps the price of the watch lower than other movements. I like the fact that each and every watch is tested for water resistance under strict standards. Some MicroBrands have started selling bracelets separately from their watch, yet Helm Watches includes the bracelet for free plus a Nato strap. I know there was some talk about a loose bezel but the bezel on my Vanuatu had zero issues and had very little play when rotating the bezel.

I believe the Helm Watches Vanuatu offers great value and rivals higher end divers. The Sinn-like style of the hands and the overall look of the watch makes this a perfect tool watch. If you like a diver with German styling and rugged no nonsense look then the Helm Watches should be on the top of your search list. The current holiday special that makes this watch only $295 with free worldwide shipping takes this watch to the next level. At $295 shipped you are not going to find a better diver watch anywhere.

Minuteman Jester Watch is a brilliant and well made watch that looks good for both formal and casual settings. I can see myself wearing this watch at the office and out with friends. Watch collectors and those that want to show their support to veterans will appreciate the Jester watch for it’s design, special meaning, and raising awareness of charities to veterans and their families.

Founder Samuel Tay based out of Singapore launch a new Micro Brand Reverie and first model called the Sea-Spirit. The company skipped the crowdfunding route and is selling the watch directly to consumers in a limited 125 piece Edition. The two models you can choose have either a black dial or blue dial watch. The nautical inspired timepiece sells for $420 and comes with a 1 year international repair warranty.

The Sea-Spirit is presented in a nice leather gift box and the watch includes an extra black sailcloth inspired watch strap. The Sea-Spirit comes with a brown leather strap with butterfly clasp. Both straps include convenient strap-change (CSC) design function for effortless changing of straps. I am a big fan of quick changing straps as the spring bar tools tends to damage the watch case and strap. The convenient strap-change makes it easy to swap straps in seconds for a new look.

The watch features a unique Guilloché dial inspired by sea waves. The Guilloché dial transforms under different lighting conditions. As the dial hits the light it’s almost looks like the dial is moving in a wave-like matter. The squarish cushion case measures 41mm diameter with 47mm lug to lug. I found the watch to be a perfect size for my 7 inch wrist. The polished and brushed case is full of nice angles that show off the polished and brushed metals.

The white numerals is highly readable with a small seconds hand offset to the 5. You will find a date window at 3 o’clock with thick hours and minutes hands that are lumed. The Sea-Spirit also features Sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, Automatic Miyota 8218 movement, and 10 ATM water resistance.

The Reverie Sea-Spirit was one of my favorite watches released in 2015. The limited edition timepiece is a must have for any watch collector. The unique sea wave dial alone makes this different from any Micro Brand I have reviewed. At $420 you are getting a great value for watch that only a few will have a pleasure to own.

Sea Wave dial
Rich blue dial
Watch that looks good in all angles
Perfect everyday watch for casual and formal wear

Would prefer 9015 over Miyota 8218

Uhuru is an South African brand created by Nick Warner who later moved to New Zealand. Warner who was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, took design cues from his native land to make his first watch. Uhuru in Swahili means “freedom” and the logo is a raised fist for freedom. Uhuru watches successfully raised enough funds through Kickstarter to start selling their watches directly to consumers.

316L stainless steel case
44mm diameter case (excluding crowns)
Miyota 8215 movement
Exhibition sapphire crystal back
Double domed sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating
Internal rotating bezel operated by the 9H crown
Super Luminova hands
20 ATM water resistance

Uhuru watches was one of the first Microbrands I found on Facebook. At the time it was only a concept and the watch has come along way from the original design concept to the present finished product. Kickstarter is a popular way to start out your watch company with limited funds. I have seen the Microbrand world blow up in recent times. The amount of Kickstarter watch campaigns have increase so much that it’s tough to cover each one. This is why I tend to weed out the common pieces that look the same and choose to cover the truly original designs. The Uhuru Impi is certainly a piece that is unusual and different from any other watch I have covered. The Impi was name after a Zulu warrior armed with an assegai spear and a large cowhide shield. The curves of the case and the strap design of the Impi Automatic draw on the shapes and textures of the shield. The assegai can be found in the shape of the spearhead hands. The watch features a unique double crowns with the one at 9 o’clock operating the internal rotating bezel and the one at 3 o’clock sets the date and provides hand winding.

Uhuru features a 44mm case, Miyota 8215 movement, and double domed sapphire crystal with anti reflective coating. The watch also feature double crowns with internal rotating bezel, 316L stainless steel case, Super Luminova hands and 20ATm Water resistance. The Uhuru double crowns at 9’oclock crown used for the internal bezel that rotates and the 3’oclock crown that sets the time and date as well as provides a hand winding option. The 200M water resistance should provide ample protection for swimming, showering and scuba diving. I prefer Uhuru’s matte finish case to polished steel as fine scratches are less visible. I normally prefer watches with a 40-42mm case but the 44mm wears surprisingly well. I also own a Panerai watch with a 44mm case and like the solid wrist presence of a larger watch. The Uhuru feels solid on the wrist and has a bold design that differentiates itself from other Microbrands watches on the market. The dial comes in black or ivory and the one in this review is the ivory which is a yellowish-white matte finish color. The ivory color dial is a nice change of pace from the usual black/blue/white dial divers. The lume on the watch could be a little better although I had no issue reading the time at night.

When I first got a hold of the Impi watch I was impressed with the level of craftsmanship that the watch offers. I compared it to higher end Microbrands such as Magrette and Lum-Tec. I have recent timepieces from both companies and the Impi compares well with these brands. Kickstarter is a great place to find new watches but when all the watches look the same I get bored and it’s refreshing to find a uniquely designed watch like the Uhuru Impi. Overall the Uhuru Impi is something special and a great first watch from Nick Warner. If I had to pick just one watch to introduce someone to the Micro Brand Watch World it would be the Impi.

Unique design
Great backstory behind the brand
Affordable price
Nice premium leather strap
Quality timepiece
Superb customer service
Great wrist presence

May be too large for some
Some would prefer a 9015 over the 8215

The Impi Automatic is available now in Ivory dial with brown strap for $349 HERE

Nick Warner is working on his next watch release for Uhuru Watch Company as well as founding Microbrand Watch World, a community focused site that promotes crowdfunded watch brands and the blogs that review them. Check out MBWW HERE

A new brand of affordable dive watches is coming out the Netherlands with the release of the Van Speyk Dutch Diver. The watch comes in 3 variations with either blue, brown or gray dial. The watch sells directly from Van Speyk for around $300USD and is a nice diver for the money. I chose the blue dial variation that has white indices and white hour and minute hands with yellow seconds.

Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic movement
Beats per hour (BPH): 21,600 BPH
Stainless steel case and bracelet
Jewels: 21
Case size: 42mm
Bracelet diameter: 22mm
Power reserve: ±40 hours
Screw down crown
Blue dial
Sapphire glass
Water resistant: 200 meter / 20 ATM
Uni-directional bezel

Van Speyk Dutch Diver features 42mm case, Miyota Automatic 8215, 200M water resistant, and Sapphire glass. Other features include Stainless Steel case/bracelet, 22mm bracelet width, Uni-directional bezel, and Luminova lume. The Uni-directional bezel has a firm clicking motion without no play in the bezel. The company is backing the watch with a 2 year warranty.

The Dutch Diver comes with a stainless steel bracelet that is less common in Micro Brands these days as they are usually sold separately. The bracelet is very good quality and adds to the value of the watch. The workhorse movement Miyota 8215 is rock solid for years of accurate time keeping. While some may prefer the Miyota 9015, the 8215 is still a reliable and dependable automatic movement. The case at 42mm is the perfect size for a guy as it’s not monstrous or too small for most wrist. The Sapphire glass is a must in a quality watch and Van Speyk features a quality one. The Vany Speyk has a very nice blue sunray dial with white hour and minute markers and a yellow seconds. The Uni-Directional bezel has no play and works as advertised. The 200M water resistance allows me to swim, shower, and weather the elements.

At only $300 you are getting a lot of watch for the money with the Dutch Diver. The watch is solidly built and has attractive style and great function. I really love blue dial divers and the Dutch Diver stands out as a great choice for an affordable dive watch. You will be hard press to find another entry level dive watch with the features that the Dutch Diver has. Van Speyk is certainly getting noticed with it’s new diver watch with great style, features, and price. While you can find many Swiss Made watches, you will find very few Dutch Made ones as nice as the Dutch Diver.

Lum-Tec has released the new Abyss 400 series that is a smaller version of last years Abyss 600M. The new Abyss 400M is part of Lum-Tec’s collection of luxury diving watches. The watch features an amazing 400 meters water resistance. Also the watch features the trademarked Maximum Darkness Visibility (MDV Technology) with an old radium tone lume. Other features include a matte finished CNC cutout dial, double-sided anti-reflective coating and Miyota 9015 automatic movement. The 400M-3 is part of a limited and numbered series of only 100 watches worldwide.

Precision tuned 28,800 BPH Miyota 9015 Japan automatic movement with hand winding and hack feature
One year limited warranty
Limited numbered series of 100
Free lifetime timing adjustments

Last years Abyss 600M was an instant hit watch model yet it was too big for some at 48MM case with 13mm thickness. The 42MM case of the Abyss 400M is much more reasonable for both smaller and larger wrists. The 22mm lug width should allow you to find a plentiful amount of third party straps. The watch features a Bead blasted titanium carbide PVD (titanium color) and Sapphire crystal with double side clear anti-reflective coating. The 400M-3 is powered by the Miyota 9015 28,800 BPH automatic movement. Lum-Tec offers lifetime timing adjustments for free with the watch.

The Bead blasted titanium carbide PVD has a bit of a warmer color to it than the usual grey. The watch has hex bolts on the on the lugs and the side of the case that gives it a tool watch feel. The large screw down crown is signed with the LT Lum-Tec logo. The watch face features oversized 12, 3, 6 and 9 numerals with hour bars in between. The dial features MDV old radium lume that is bright during the day and night. A little bit of light makes the watch face glow like crazy. The hour and minutes feature skeletonized hands and seconds a lollipop hand. The leather brown strap is one of the best leather straps included with a watch that I have seen. The buckle includes the same titanium carbide PVD with small logo on it.

Last year all the reviews mentions that the Abyss would be great in a smaller size and that wish has happened with the Abyss 400M. The 400 meter water resistance can withstand all water activities and the design is very manly and durable. This is one of the best sporty watches with a premium leather strap and Titanium PVD case.
